Aerobic Septic Systems in Oklahoma

An aerobic treatment unit (ATU) is a small onsite plant: air is pumped through the wastewater so aerobic bacteria treat it to a much higher standard than a septic tank alone, and the treated effluent is dispersed by sprinklers or subsurface drip. On the heavy clay that covers much of Bryan and Marshall counties, it's the system that makes a homesite work at all — and Oklahoma wraps it in more specific rules than any other system type. Knowing them keeps both the bid and the ownership experience honest.

When an aerobic system is genuinely required

  • Heavy soil. A 581 soil profile that grades Group 5 (clay) prohibits conventional and shallow-extended fields; the practical menu becomes ATU-fed drip or spray, ET/A, or a lagoon on 2½+ acres.
  • Small or tight lots where conventional minimums and separations can't be met.
  • The 300-foot water-body zone. Within Zone 1 of a listed water body like Texoma, any dispersal field needs certified nitrogen reduction ahead of it — and note this is NSF/ANSI Standard 245, a class above the ordinary unit (details in the lake rules guide).

Outside those triggers, aerobic is a choice, not a mandate — which is why the soil test belongs before the quote.

What the rules require of the equipment

Residential ATUs certify to ANSI/NSF Standard 40 and are permitted for design flows from 100 to 1,500 gallons per day. The install includes a trash tank ahead of the unit, a pump tank behind it with a high-water alarm set at half-full, and — when spray dispersal is used — certified disinfection between treatment and the sprinkler heads. Spray fields size from DEQ's charts by soil group and county: Bryan and Marshall share the zones-6-and-7 chart, where a 3-bedroom home on Group 5 soil needs 3,531 square feet of spray area. Drip lines carry their own soil-group separation ladder (18 inches over rock or saturated soil in Group 1 ground, stepping down to 6 inches in Groups 4–5). The two-year rule most owners never hear about

Oklahoma writes the early maintenance obligation into the rule itself. Under OAC 252:641-10-3, the installer of any aerobic treatment system must maintain it for two years from installation at no additional cost to the owner — repairing, adjusting, or replacing malfunctioning parts; testing chlorine residual (spray systems) and measuring trash-tank sludge at least every six months; and notifying the owner in writing of all maintenance performed at each visit. Owner-caused damage is excluded, and when the two years end, the owner is solely responsible for keeping the system operating as designed — most people hire that out under an annual service contract. Two practical consequences for anyone taking bids: the first two years of service are already yours by rule (a bid that sells them back to you is charging twice), and the years-three-and-beyond contract price is worth asking about in writing before you sign anything.
