Conventional Septic Systems: When the Cheapest Tier Works Here

A conventional system is the original and still the best deal in onsite sewage: a septic tank, gravity flow, and a subsurface absorption field doing the treatment for free, forever. No compressor running around the clock, no sprinkler heads, no service contract when the rule-mandated period ends — because there is no mandated service at all. In this ring it's not the default the way it is in sandier parts of the state, but it's far from extinct, and finding out whether your lot qualifies is cheap.

Who qualifies: the soil gate

DEQ allows conventional and shallow-extended fields only where the 581 soil profile grades the dispersal area into Groups 2, 2a, 3, 3a, or 4 — with a vertical separation between trench bottom and the limiting layer that scales from 24 inches (Group 2) down to 10 inches (Group 4). Group 1 (coarse sand — too fast) and Group 5 (clay — too slow) are prohibited outright, and a percolation rate over 75 minutes per inch closes the perc-test route too (OAC 252:641 App. A Figs. 1–2; verified Aug 2026). Around here the odds run with geography: Muskogee silt loam under Colbert and the Konsil sandy-loam uplands across Marshall County test into the middle groups regularly; the Burleson clay flats around Madill and Caddo rarely do. What DEQ requires of the build

A tank of at least 1,000 gallons through four bedrooms (+250 per bedroom beyond), dispersal trenches with at least six inches of storage-media depth, no run of perforated pipe longer than 150 feet from a distribution structure, lines up to 8 feet apart center-to-center — and field length from the Appendix H charts. Both counties sit in the zones-6-to-8 sizing column: a 3-bedroom home needs, for example, 380 feet of gravel trench on Group 3 soil (340 with manufactured media), stretching to 750 feet on Group 4 — with an optional 15% reduction where perforated pipe is used between distribution structures per the rule's conditions. Lot minimums: ¾ acre with a private well and ½ acre on public water for faster soils; a full acre when the profile grades 3a–4 or the perc runs slow (OAC 252:641 App. A Fig. 3, App. H Fig. 3, Subchapter 12; verified Aug 2026).

The honest comparison with aerobic

2026 Oklahoma market guides report conventional installs around $5,000–$8,000 versus $7,500–$12,500 for aerobic — before aerobic's electricity and post-warranty service. One current-market caveat cuts the other way: installers report rising gravel and chamber prices, so a slow-soil lot that demands a very long conventional field can price above a compact aerobic install.
