Lagoon Systems: the Big-Lot Answer to Heavy Clay

City-raised buyers are sometimes startled to learn that a fenced pond of treated sewage is a legal, engineered, DEQ-permitted septic system — but the lagoon is a longstanding rural Oklahoma answer, and on the blackland clay that covers much of this ring it's often the most economical one. The same clay that ruins a dispersal field is exactly what a lagoon wants: the rules require its bottom and dike interiors to be built of compacted homogeneous clay, and it passes a leakage test at final inspection precisely because the ground won't drain.

Who can have one

The gate is land: a lagoon requires a lot of at least 2½ acres, and it keeps its own separations — 50 feet from a building (measured from the dike), 10 feet from property lines, and the standard well distances (50 feet to a private well, doubled in fast ground; 300 feet to a public supply well). No vertical soil separation applies, which is why a Group 5 clay verdict on the 581 soil profile doesn't touch it (OAC 252:641 App. A Fig. 1, App. E; verified Aug 2026). On acreage around Madill, Caddo, and Bokchito — where the clay runs deepest — the practical choice on a failed or new site is usually lagoon versus aerobic, and the lagoon has no compressor, no sprinklers, and no service contract.

How DEQ sizes and builds one here

Sizing runs by county and bedrooms. Marshall County (net-evaporation zone 7): a 3-bedroom home takes a 30-foot-square bottom, or a 40-foot round one. Bryan County (zone 6): 35-foot square / 45-foot round. Depth is fixed: 3 to 6½ feet of liquid, at least 7 feet total. Dikes go up in compacted 6-to-9-inch clay lifts at a 1:3 slope with a 4-foot top, a foot above surrounding grade to shed runoff. And every lagoon is fenced — at least 4 feet, gated and controlled — unless the whole property is fenced with controlled access (OAC 252:641 Subchapter 15, App. H Fig. 18; verified Aug 2026).

Costs and caveats

A lagoon's price is mostly earthwork — dirt, dike, fence — and it varies too much by site to quote an honest statewide range; bid it against aerobic on your parcel. The caveats are practical: it takes room (and the view is a fenced pond), mosquito and vegetation upkeep are on the owner, and it needs the right clay — a sandy Konsil upland that would fail a leakage test is the wrong ground for it, and coincidentally the ground where a cheaper conventional field may pass anyway. One more scope note: lagoons aren't a lakeside workaround — on Texoma-zone lots, put the question to the DEQ desk in Durant before assuming any system type.
