What a Septic System Actually Costs in Oklahoma
"How much is a septic system?" has three honest answers in Oklahoma, because the state permits three very different classes of system — and which one your lot gets isn't a preference, it's a soil-test result. Here are the tiers as 2026 market sources report them, the DEQ fees that are fixed and published, and the levers that actually move the number.

Tier 1 — Conventional (the cheapest, when soil allows it)
A gravity septic tank and subsurface dispersal field: no electricity, no sprinklers, no maintenance contract. The catch is eligibility — a conventional field requires the 581 soil profile to grade the lot into DEQ Groups 2–4 (not the coarse-sand or heavy-clay extremes), plus lot-size minimums (¾ acre on a private well / ½ acre on public water for favorable soil; 1 acre when slow). What actually moves your number
- Soil group — the big one. It picks the tier, and within a tier it sets dispersal-field length via DEQ's sizing charts.
- Bedrooms — DEQ sizes systems by bedroom count: dispersal fields step up per bedroom in the sizing charts, and the septic tank runs at least 1,000 gallons through four bedrooms plus 250 gallons for each bedroom beyond (OAC 252:641-7-4).
- County sizing zone — Bryan and Marshall counties sit in different net-evaporation zones (6 and 7), which changes ET/A and lagoon dimensions between Durant and Madill-side lots.
