Get the Soil Test First
Here's a conversation that happens all over clay country: a homeowner asks about a septic system, somebody looks at the ground — sometimes literally from the truck — and says, "this won't pass, you'll have to go aerobic." Sometimes that's right. But "aerobic" is the more expensive tier by thousands of dollars, and in Oklahoma the question isn't answered by eyeball. It's answered by a specific, cheap, regulated test: the soil profile description — DEQ Form 641-581 — and until one exists for your lot, nobody actually knows what it can carry.
What the 581 actually is
A certified soil profiler (or a DEQ Environmental Specialist) opens at least three test holes at the corners of a 50'/50'/75' triangle on the proposed dispersal area and logs what's really down there — textures, structure, water-saturation features. The profile classifies the lot into one of DEQ's soil groups, from Group 1 (coarse sand — too fast) to Group 5 (heavy clay — too slow), and the group determines the menu (OAC 252:641 Subchapters 3 & App. A–B; verified Aug 2026):

Why "just go aerobic" is the wrong default here
This ring is exactly where the test pays for itself, because the ground genuinely swings both ways. USDA maps blackland Burleson clay through Madill and Caddo — profiles that really do grade Group 5. But it also maps Muskogee silt loam under Colbert and huge tracts of Konsil fine sandy loam across Marshall County's uplands — ground with a real shot at Groups 2a–4, where a conventional system can save a five-figure difference over an aerobic install plus its lifetime of electricity and service contracts. And the in-between series (Dennis, Durant loam) are precisely the ones no one can call from the surface, because their clay arrives a foot down.
The test that settles it costs $214.36 if you dig the pits for DEQ, $357.28 if DEQ augers — or a private certified profiler at market rates (2026 Oklahoma sources report roughly $350–$550). Against a several-thousand-dollar tier difference, that's the best-leveraged money in the entire project.
The order that protects your budget
- Soil profile first. Before design, before quotes — and if you're buying land, before closing. A 581 in the due-diligence window is cheap insurance on the whole purchase.
- Let the 581 pick the system. The report, not the sales pitch, determines what DEQ will authorize. If the profile says conventional works, you're allowed to take the cheaper path.
- Aerobic where it's actually required. Heavy-clay profiles, small lots, and the 300-foot water-body zone (where the unit class steps up to NSF/ANSI 245) are the real aerobic triggers — real, but specific. A quote that skips the test and starts at the expensive tier deserves one question: "what did the soil profile show?"
None of this makes aerobic systems bad — on the ground that needs them they're the right answer, and the aerobic guide covers them properly. The point is sequence: in Oklahoma the soil report is the decision document, and it should exist before anyone prices you a system.
